An experiment in Pacoima, Los Angeles, applied reflective coating to over 700,000 square feet of asphalt. This treatment reduced afternoon air temperatures by up to 3.5°F during a September heatwave. Surface temperatures of the pavement itself fell by approximately 10°F, showing altered heat absorption. While cooler air was observed, radiant heat from surfaces still impacted thermal comfort for people.
